What Role is Information Warfare Playing in Our Lives?
We may never know.
Information Warfare is a subtle beast: Invisible. Unknowable. Changeable.
Like a vast leviathan, it is only observable by the currents and eddies of water it disturbs in passing.
Information Warfare is like an unknown planet astronomers have never observed directly, only glimpsed through the gravitational effect it exerts on the celestial dance around it.
How much information warfare are we sifting through daily? Hard to say.
How many propaganda campaigns, disinformation dumps, election tampering operations, hacking attacks, infrastructure attacks, and other nefarious shenanigans are happening daily? Giant content creation hives and troll farms from Beijing to Moscow and beyond are pumping narratives onto the internet and social media platforms every day of the week and twice on Sunday.
How can we possibly sort through it all?
Some countries have admitted to using it — China publicly adopted its “Three Warfares Strategy” in 2003. Some countries have been caught using it — China and Russia. A Russian propaganda campaign designed to keep Ukraine out of NATO is one of the main reasons the world is marching closer toward global conflict with each passing day.
