Once the darling of progressive punk journalism, the outlet’s editorializing days appear to be over.

The media landscape is suddenly and completely littered with layoffs, downsizing, right-sizing, and streamlining.

Insider, The New York Daily News, the Washington Post, Paramount, The Los Angeles Times, Conde Nast, Sports Illustrated, BuzzFeed, and Red Ventures; the list just keeps growing.

Mainstream media bloodbath: News outlets slash jobs as business suffers,” reported Sara Fischer for Axios in January. “Nearly a dozen mainstream media companies are gutting staff and scrambling to rescue their struggling businesses.”

Los Angeles Times slashes more than 20% of newsroom staff as the paper confronts a ‘financial crisis,’” wrote Oliver Darcy for CNN on January 23, 2024. “The Los Angeles Times on Tuesday, facing what senior leadership described this week as a ‘financial crisis,’ commenced a round of painful layoffs across the newsroom, a workforce reduction that is set to be one of the most severe in the newspaper’s 142-year history.”

The Messenger is shutting down,” Sara Fischer revealed for Axios in January. “The Messenger, a digital news startup that launched with $50 million in funding last May, plans to shut down operations, a source familiar with the situation told Axios Wednesday.”

“Why it matters: It’s one of the biggest media failures of the internet era,” Fischer lamented.
