Q: Which branch of the U.S. armed forces is responsible for securing homefront coastlines, combatting drug trafficking, thwarting the foul traffickers in human beings, preventing and responding to environmental disasters, and maritime rescue operations?

The U.S. Coast Guard plays a role that far outstrips that of search and rescue. U.S. law enforcement and security agencies like Homeland Security, the Drug Enforcement Agency, the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, and Firearms, and the Federal Bureau of Investigation depend on the U.S. Coast Guard to complete their vital national security roles.

In many ways, the U.S. Coast Guard has never been more indispensable.

In California, a recent plan introduced by Governor Gavin Newsom demonstrates one of the vital roles the Coast Guard plays in securing this nation.

“The Master Plan builds on the Governor’s $1 billion investment to tackle this crisis — including an expansion of California National Guard-supported operations that last year led to a 594% increase in seized fentanyl,” said Gov. Newsom’s office in a statement.
