Progressives are fumbling for a response to Trump 2.0 and struggling to articulate a vision.
“After the big loss, what’s next?” asked former Congressman Tim Roemer for Salon this week in “An open letter to the Democratic Party,”
The same hopeless, despondent tone was echoed throughout the progressive media sphere this week as Democrats struggled to mount a defense to Trump 2.0 and find a way forward.
“We lost the presidential race and the Senate and failed to win back the House last year because we have been consistently losing white, Black, Hispanic, and Asian middle-class voters over the past 25 years,” complained former Congressman Roemer. “This is an open wound which is bleeding profusely and if not addressed, could be the death of the patient.”
“Democrats need to find ways to reduce bureaucracy, increase opportunities for home ownership, and build affordable middle-class housing,” he suggested. “We need to pioneer and announce new programs that grab the attention and support of angry and frustrated voters.”
