“Surrender, Feinstein!”
In 2021, progressive activist groups pressured Supreme Court Justice Stephen Breyer to retire. Now, they’ve set their cap for Sen. Diane Feinstein (D-CA).
Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s death in 2020 left her many supporters grief-stricken. Long a scion of the land’s highest court and fierce defender of abortion rights, Ginsburg’s famous “dissent collar” was a symbol of the progressive movement.
Ruth Bader Ginsburg’s legacy was perhaps tarnished, however, in 2022 when the Supreme Court overturned Roe V. Wade.
Had Bader Ginsburg still sat the court in 2022, the Dobb’s ruling could never have happened. Likewise, had she retired in 2016, as many of her supporters urged her to do, Roe V. Wade might still be the law of the land today.
Many people, including some of her supporters, had urged her to retire while President Barack Obama was in office to ensure that a liberal justice would replace her if she were to retire or pass away.
However, Ginsburg did not retire during Obama’s presidency, likely for a combination of personal and political reasons. She was known for her strong work ethic and dedication to her role as a Justice and may have felt that she still had more to contribute to the Court and the country.
