Should Progressives Let Biden Move to the Center on Immigration?
Whatever its intent, the effect of an “Open Borders” policy platform is likely to be the opposite.
“Why Can’t Biden Move to the Center?” wondered author and political analyst Ruy Teixeira for The Liberal Patriot in January.
The short answer, according to Teixeira and countless other moderate Democrats, is that the ultra-progressive wing of the Democratic Party won’t let him.
Perhaps they should.
“Open Borders” as a policy platform has all the promise of “Defund the Police” — that is, no promise at all.
Open Borders, like Defund the Police, whatever its intent is having the opposite effect on the subject of immigration, border enforcement, and citizenship in America.
Ostensibly, “Defund the Police” was a policy platform intended to help keep minority residents in low-income areas safe from over-policing. It has instead made the very people it was designed to help less safe in their neighborhoods and homes.
The failed policy platform of Defund the Police has, since falling precipitously from its moment in popular opinion, boomeranged into clamoring calls to spend more on policing in America.
