Secret Service Director Resigns Under Relentless Bipartisan Pressure

The attempt on the life of former President Donald Trump on July 13 shook lawmakers on Capitol Hill to their collective core.

Immediately following the attack, leaders in both parties denounced political violence and, in one united voice, demanded answers from the Secret Service.

On Monday, Secret Service director Kimberly Cheatle appeared before lawmakers in an attempt to answer those questions. Her answers failed to satisfy lawmakers.

On Tuesday morning, Secret Service Director Cheatle resigned.

“To the Men and Women of the U.S. Secret Service,” Director Cheatle began in an internal resignation letter obtained by news media outlets. “The Secret Service’s solemn mission is to protect our nation’s leaders and financial infrastructure.”

“On July 13th, we fell short on that mission,” Ms. Cheatle admitted. “As your Director, I take full responsibility for the security lapse.”

“We remain an organization based on integrity and staffed by individuals of exceptional dedication and talent,” Cheatle continued, promising the Secret Service would “move forward with our investigatory and protective mission in a steadfast…
