In recent times, the global political landscape has been rocked by the unexpected ascension of populist leaders in countries as diverse as Denmark and Argentina. While seemingly disparate, these victories are tethered by a common thread: inflation.

Argentinian economist and self-proclaimed libertarian, Javier Milei, clinched a surprising win in the presidential race, capturing a staggering 56% of the votes in a runoff against left-wing contender Sergio Massa. His rise, described by some as unlikely, echoes a resounding rejection of Argentina’s entrenched political establishment, fueled by years of economic turmoil.

What we can learn from Javier Milei’s victory — and Argentina’s ruinous economy,” wrote Jon Miltimore for the conservative news site the Washington Examiner on November 25, 2023.

“Argentines elected 53-year-old political outsider Javier Milei as their new president on Sunday,” began Miltimore. “Milei, an economist and self-described libertarian, pulled in nearly 56% of all votes counted in his runoff against left-wing rival opponent, Sergio Massa, completing one of the most unlikely presidential victories in modern history.”
