Mixed Messages From Political Leaders This Veteran’s Day

While President Biden went to great lengths to celebrate Veteran’s Day and support veterans in 2023, NYC public schools didn’t close for the holiday. Why?

Veterans Day is a day of pride and gratitude,” enthused Victor Gelfuso for the New York Daily Star on Saturday.

It is a sentiment still shared by many in America. Individuals, nonprofit organizations, religious groups, local governments, and companies often use the yearly opportunity to express gratitude and patriotism.

Progressive Surpasses 1,000 Vehicles Donated to Military Families with 11th Annual Keys to Progress Program,” reported the PRN Newswire. It was one of many privately funded and sponsored programs honoring U.S. veterans this year.

Yet, many progressive organizations, including some news publications, almost seemed to ignore the holiday.

The Forgotten Meaning of Veterans Day,” was Stephen C. Webster’s rosy take on Veteran’s Day a decade ago for The Progressive Magazine — “A voice for peace and social justice since 1909.”

“After all they’ve done to build and shape this deeply flawed, often magical modern world we inhabit, shouldn’t we try to give something back on Veterans Day that’s a bit more lasting than a free movie ticket or slice of pie?” waxed…
