Elected officials from Florida to New York to Massachusetts were swatted this Christmas. Why?
Christmas Day dawned cold and bright in 2023. But for some famous politicians, and some not-so-famous, Christmas Day was nearly ruined by an inconvenience that might have led to disaster.
“I was just swatted,” complained Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene at 10:48 a.m. on Christmas morning. “This is like the 8th time. On Christmas with my family here. My local police are the GREATEST and shouldn’t have to deal with this. I appreciate them so much and my family and I are in joyous spirits celebrating the birth of our savior Jesus Christ!”
While Taylor Greene was willing to keep a good attitude about the incident — and some media outlets seemed eager to dismiss the event due to the Representative’s standing in the community as a controversial Trump-supporting conservative — “swatting,” a dangerous and malicious trend gripping the United States, has emerged as a grave threat to public safety, leveraging emergency response systems for nefarious purposes.
This disturbing trend involves hoax calls to law enforcement, fabricating severe emergencies, and prompting SWAT teams or specialized units to deploy to a targeted individual’s location.
