In a speech to Congress last week, Israeli President Isaac Herzog cautioned U.S. lawmakers not to become complacent about the threat posed by Iran.

Last week, President of Israel Isaac Herzog addressed a joint session of Congress at the invitation of House Speaker Kevin McCarthy (R-CA).

Mr. Herzog received a warm welcome from members of Congress in both parties. Aside from a few Progressive Squad members who notably boycotted the address and a minor flap over some comments made by Progressive Caucus leader Rep. Pramila Jayapal, the historic event was a rare point of bipartisan camaraderie on Capitol Hill.

Israeli President Isaac Herzog affirms ‘sacred bond’ with the U.S. in a speech to Congress,” reported Michael Mitsanas for NBC News on July 19, 2023. “Some progressives boycotted his address, citing Israel’s treatment of Palestinians.”

“Yet today, at this moment in my people’s history, gathering on Capitol Hill to celebrate 75 years of Israeli independence with our greatest partner and friend, the United States of America, my soul is overflowing with pride and joy,” Mr. Herzog told the assembled lawmakers. “The people of Israel are grateful to no end for the ancient promise fulfilled and for the friendship we have formed.”
