Higher Education Cancelled At Columbia
School administrators have lost control over protesting pro-Palestine students and classes have been moved online.
“Pro-Palestinian protests could foreshadow a summer of upheaval,” fretted Tim Craig for the Washington Post last week.
It seems Mr. Craig was both correct and incorrect in his assessment of the pro-Palestine protests then sweeping the country: The demonstrations did not portend future upheaval; they announced it presently.
“What Just Happened At Columbia University,” Alexander Sammon attempted to explain for Slate on April 21, 2024, offering to take readers “Inside the student protests that led to more than 100 arrests.”
“In a matter of days, Columbia University’s campus has become a flashpoint for the country’s political unrest — the site of impassioned youth protests over Israel’s war in Gaza and U.S. support for it, which has in turn fueled vociferous backlash, a flurry of national media attention, and more than 100 arrests,” Sammon summarized.
“‘Antisemitic, unconscionable, and dangerous’: White House responds to chaos at Columbia,” reported Kelly Garrity for POLITICO on April 21, 2024, adding that “Rep. Jared Moskowitz (D-Fla.) offered to walk with Jewish students on Columbia’s campus.”
