Censorship of Covid Lab Leak Theory Humiliates Social Media Giants

Facebook has ended its policy of removing posts speculating on Covid origins. Better late than never?

“In light of ongoing investigations into the origins of COVID-19 and in consultation with public health experts, we will no longer remove the claim that COVID-19 is man-made from our apps,” a spokesperson from Facebook said on Wednesday, to the complete shock of many. “We’re continuing to work with health experts to keep pace with the evolving nature of the pandemic and regularly update our policies as facts and trends emerge.”

The news this week that Facebook is ending its censorship of speculations into COVID-19 origins was met with mystification in some sectors, outrage in others.

After all, the American public has been routinely assured for over a year that there is, “no truth whatsoever in these persistent rumors that COVID-19 escaped from a virology lab in Wuhan.”

What’s more, powerful social media giants like Facebook, Twitter and Youtube have spent the past year actively removing any claims to the contrary, censoring the speech of ordinary Americans, deplatforming anyone speculating on it- no matter their qualifications- and branding anything managing to slip through, not as unproven, but as patently false.
