Anti-Israel Event Scuttled by House Republicans, Moved to Senate
After Rep. Tlaib’s event was canceled by House Speaker McCarthy, she moved it to the Senate side at the behest of Sen. Bernie Sanders.
“Rep. Rashida Tlaib will host a congressional event this week to mourn the ‘catastrophe’ of Israel’s founding,” reported the conservative news outlet, the Washington Free Beacon on May 8, 2023. “Tlaib is hosting the event alongside an array of anti-Israel groups, some of which have defended terrorism.”
It was a tweet subsequently shared by House Speaker Kevin McCarthy, canceling the controversial event in question.
“This event in the US Capitol is canceled,” retweeted Speaker Kevin McCarthy on May 9, 2023. “Instead, I will host a bipartisan discussion to honor the 75th anniversary of the US-Israel relationship.”
“It’s wrong for members of Congress to traffic in anti-Semitic tropes about Israel,” McCarthy told the Washington Free Beacon. “As long as I’m Speaker, we are going to support Israel’s right to self-determination and self-defense, unequivocally and in a bipartisan fashion.”
“House Speaker Kevin McCarthy blocks Rep. Rashida Tlaib from hosting anti-Israel event,” reported Victor Nava for the New York Post on May 10.
