A French Election Bellwether?
“We are not perfect, we haven’t done everything right, but we have results,” French President Emmanuel Macron said recently: “The far-right is the main danger.”
The surprise results of the recent election in Europe underscore a new vulnerability for French President Emmanuel Macon — and perhaps others.
“European Union Vote Delivers Shift to Right, in Blow to French and German Governments,” announced Laurence Norman and Noemie Bisserbe for the Wall Street Journal two weeks ago.
“French President Macron calls parliamentary elections after nationalist parties’ show of strength in European Union elections,” added Norman and Bisserbe. “After the French results, Macron said he was dissolving parliament to call fresh elections.”
For France, the recent election isn’t a new movement but the next stage of an old one. Yellow Vest protests have been periodically rocking France since 2018 and only tapered off during the pandemic.
“How Yellow Vests left ‘indelible mark’ on French politics,” reported France 24 in 2019.
Five years later, it seems, the mark remains. Now, however, disaffected and angry French voters will have another way to express their feelings en masse.
